🌿 Ficinia nodosa:  Knobby Club-rush
 
Ficinia nodosa is a hardy, evergreen Australian native sedge with fine, upright-to-arching green foliage and distinctive rounded brown flower and seed heads. It forms a naturally attractive clump and works beautifully in native gardens, coastal landscapes, rain gardens and around ponds or other moisture-retaining areas.
 
It is an exceptionally adaptable species, tolerating drought, frost, salt spray, saline conditions and periods of wet soilonce established. 
 
Its natural habitat includes coastal swamps, saltmarshes, watercourse margins, sandy coastal areas and dune environments, including along the Tasmanian coast.

Height: Approximately 0.5–1.5 m, generally around 1 m in garden conditions
Width: Approximately 0.6–1 m, forming a dense clump
Water requirement: Low once established; adaptable to both dry conditions and wetter areas. Water regularly while establishing, particularly through the first summer. 
Sun / Part shade: Full sun to part shade
Hardiness: Very hardy; drought tolerant, frost tolerant and highly tolerant of coastal exposure, salt spray and saline soils. 
Soil type: Adaptable to sand, sandy loam, loam, gravel and heavier soils; tolerates acidic, neutral and alkaline soils. 
Habitat: Coastal dunes, coastal swamps, saltmarshes, wetland margins, watercourses and sandy areas; also adapts well to garden landscapes. 
Uses: Native gardens, coastal gardens, mass planting, borders, pond and waterway edges, rain gardens, erosion control, sand stabilisation, revegetation and habitat planting. 
 
🐸 A lovely ecological addition
 
Ficinia nodosa is particularly useful where you're trying to create functional habitat rather than simply ornamental planting. Its dense clumping growth can provide shelter for small animals and invertebrates, while its ability to cope with wet conditions makes it useful around ponds, drainage areas and wetland-style plantings. It is also used for erosion control and sand binding in suitable coastal environments.
