Description:

  • Height: Approximately 4–8 metres, depending on growing conditions and pruning.

  • Width: Approximately 3–4 metres.

  • Uses: Native gardens, screening, informal hedging, windbreaks, habitat restoration and larger garden spaces. Can also be pruned to maintain a more compact form.

  • Climate: Adaptable to temperate and warm-temperate climates. Performs well in many coastal and inland gardens with suitable drainage.

  • Hardiness: A hardy, fast-growing Australian native shrub or small tree. Tolerates periods of dry weather once established and can withstand light frost. Young plants benefit from protection from harsh conditions.

  • Habitat: Native to eastern Australia, where it occurs in open forest, woodland and heathland environments.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil but adapts to a range of soil types. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

  • Position: Full sun to part shade. A sunny position encourages healthy growth and flowering.

  • Flowering: Usually late winter through spring, producing clusters of delicate cream to white flowers along the branches.

  • Maintenance: Low maintenance once established. Water regularly during establishment, mulch around the root zone and prune lightly as needed to maintain shape. Avoid excessive fertilising, particularly with high-phosphorus products.

  • Wildlife value: Flowers provide a valuable source of nectar for native birds, bees and other pollinating insects, while the dense foliage offers shelter for wildlife.

Talulah growing note: Hakea salicifolia can grow into a substantial shrub or small tree, so it is best suited to gardens with enough room for its mature size. Its adaptability and attractive flowers make it a useful choice for native habitat plantings.

Growing information is a guide only. Mature size, flowering periods and plant performance vary with local climate, soil conditions, water availability and growing environment.
