🌿 Hakea laurina: Pincushion Hakea

Native to south-west Western Australia, this evergreen shrub or small tree is renowned for its unusual rounded flowers. The striking pincushion-like blooms appear in shades of deep pink to cardinal red, with delicate cream to pale-pink styles extending from the flower head. Flowers can reach around 5 cm across and attract nectar-feeding birds and bees. 
 
Its blue-green foliage and naturally upright, rounded form make it an excellent feature plant, screen or informal hedge.
 
🌱 Growing information
 
Height: Approximately 4–6 m, although plants can vary considerably depending on growing conditions.
 
Width: Approximately 2–4 m. 
 
Position: Full sun is preferred for the best flowering and a compact, well-shaped plant. It can tolerate some part shade, although flowering may be reduced and growth can become more open.
 
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of soil types provided drainage is good. Avoid waterlogged conditions. Lime-free soils are preferred. 
 
Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once established, Hakea laurina is drought tolerant and generally requires only occasional supplementary watering during prolonged dry periods. 
 
Maintenance: Generally low maintenance. Light pruning after flowering can be used to maintain shape and encourage a desirable form. Young plants may benefit from staking, particularly in exposed positions, as they can be relatively weak-rooted while establishing.
 
Hardiness: A hardy Australian native once established, with good drought tolerance. It can tolerate frost once established, although young plants and new growth may require protection in colder conditions.

Flower colour: Deep pink to cardinal red pincushion-like flower heads with cream to pale-pink styles.
 
Flowering season: Late autumn through winter, generally April–August, with flowering often at its peak around July. 
 
Available in: Forest tube (50mm)
 
The flowers are particularly valuable for bringing colour and nectar into the garden during the cooler months, when many other plants are not flowering.

In its natural range, Hakea laurina occurs across south-west Western Australia, extending from around Wagin south towards Denmark and east to Israelite Bay. (BGPA)
 
In a home habitat garden, its flowers can attract nectar-feeding birds and bees, helping create seasonal food resources for wildlife. Its dense foliage can also contribute to shelter and screening.
