Mentha australis: commonly known as River Mint, is a fragrant Australian native herb with fresh, mint-scented foliage and delicate white to pale mauve flowers. Naturally found in moist environments, it is an excellent choice for edible native gardens, pollinator plantings, habitat gardens and areas where a spreading groundcover is useful.

Height: 30–80 cm.    Width: 30–100 cm, spreading

Light: Full sun to part shade

Soil Type: Moist, fertile and well-drained soils; adaptable to sandy, loamy and heavier soils when adequate moisture is available

Water: Moderate to high; prefers consistently moist soil, particularly during warm or dry periods

Climate Zone: Temperate, cool-temperate, subtropical and suitable areas of southern Australia

Habitat:Riverbanks, creek lines, wetlands, floodplains, damp woodland and other moist habitats

Hardiness:Frost tolerant once established; performs best with adequate moisture and protection from prolonged drying

Flowering: Spring to summer, producing small white to pale mauve flowers

Maintenance:Low to moderate. Trim regularly to encourage fresh, bushy growth and contain spreading. Cut back after flowering if required.

Uses:Native herb garden, bush food garden, edible garden, pollinator planting, habitat garden, groundcover, rain gardens and naturalistic plantings

Wildlife Value:Flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other beneficial insects

Edible:Aromatic leaves can be used fresh or dried as a native mint herb and in teas and culinary preparations

Growth Habit: Spreading, aromatic perennial herb that can form a dense groundcover in suitable conditions

Talulah Tip:

Mentha australis is particularly well suited to moist garden areas. Allow it room to spread, or grow it in a contained area where its aromatic foliage can be harvested regularly.

Growing conditions may vary depending on local climate, soil, water availability and establishment conditions.
