🌿 Hardenbergia violacea - Native Sarsaparilla
Botanical family: Fabaceae (pea family).
- Height: 1–2 m, depending on growing conditions and growth habit.
- Width: 1–3 m, with a spreading or climbing habit.
- Aspect: Full sun to part shade. Full sun generally encourages more abundant flowering.
- Soil Type: Adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy and clay soils. Prefers well-drained soil.
- Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
- Maintenance: Low maintenance. Prune after flowering to encourage bushier growth and maintain shape. Provide a trellis or support if growing as a climber.
- Uses: Ideal for covering fences and trellises, growing over retaining walls, hanging baskets, garden borders or as a spreading groundcover. Can also scramble through other garden plants.
- Flowering: Winter to spring, producing clusters of purple to violet, pea-shaped flowers.
- Foliage: Evergreen, with dark green, leathery leaves and prominent veins.
- Sustainability: An Australian native plant that supports local biodiversity. Its flowers attract pollinators, including native bees, while its foliage provides a food source for butterfly caterpillars.
- Hardiness: Drought tolerance once established can help reduce ongoing watering requirements.
Talulah growing tip: Plant near a fence or trellis to showcase its climbing habit, or allow it to spread across the ground as a flowering native groundcover.
Origin: Native to Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania.
NOTE: We can only express post plants within NSW, we are currently working on changing that so thank you for your patience and for supporting a family owned small business.
